VC, DVC Joins Walk as PUMSA Participates in 2019 WORLD AIDS DAY Celebration

The Youth Friendly Centre of the University of Port Harcourt joined by the Port Harcourt University Medical Students Association on Monday 2nd December 2019 commemorated the World Aids Day 2019 with a sensitization exercise with the theme “Communities make a difference” and a free HIV screening.The sensitization exercise included a walk from the delta Park of University of Port Harcourt to The Ebitimi Emmanuel Banigo hall. The Vice chancellor, Prof. Ndowa E. S. Lale and his Deputy Vice chancellor Academics Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawenhinmi joined in on the sensitization exercise. Also in attendance were, the President of the Uniport Youth Friendly Center, Dr. Rosemary Ogu, and her Vice, Mrs. Ofurum; the organizers, among other members of staff of the University.

The Vice chancellor stated that the world AIDS day was actually on the first, but it being a Sunday it was marked on Monday, a working day, to emphasize the importance of prevention and managing the disease. He Also stated that the days when HIV /AIDS was considered a death sentence were long gone and that now HIV AIDS can be managed as a chronic disease like hypertension. He emphasized the role of prevention of the disease and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. He also expressed his delight with the fact that important Days like these are been commemorated by the school and appreciated the efforts of the Youth friendly center of the school and other people who participated in the exercise.

Members of the Port Harcourt University Medical students Association participated actively in the sensitization sharing fliers and booklets on HIV Prevention and management. Side attractions including dance competitions added further gloss to the event.

The President of PUMSA Comr. Rotifa Oluwafemi while speaking stated that the world AIDS day is a very important health day and had been marked to be commemorated on the administrative calendar of the association and he appreciated the Youth friendly center and the school leadership for the attention paid to this Public health problem. He thanked all PUMSITES that participated in the event and wished them a wonderful week.
